Natural selection Flashcards
what are the different parts in the process of natural selection?
-mutation
-variation
-selection pressure
-survive or die?
-pass it on
-generations
describe mutation
-occurs naturally in genes
-causes variants to occur (alleles) = variation
describe variation
occurs between members of the same species due to random mutation
describe selection pressure
if there is a change in the environment/mating/predators, then certain organisms with a selective advantage due to a mutated gene
describe survive or die?
-those with the mutated gene/allele survive and reproduce
-those without that version of the gene die
describe pass it on
those that survive pass on the mutated gene/advantageous characteristic to offspring
describe generations
-over many generations the allele will increase in the population
-this could potentially lead to the development of a new species (speciation)
what are the requirements for natural selection to occur?
-individuals within a population differ
-differences are passed from parents to offspring
-some individuals are more successful at reproducing and surviving
-successful individuals succeed because of variant traits they have inherited and will pass onto offspring
