Natural Resources and Energy Flashcards
World population
8 billion
Total fertility rate
average number of children women are expected to have. 2.1 births per women per lifetime
Replacement Rate
the total fertility rate necessary to offset deaths in a country and keep the size of its population constant
Trends
general direction in which economic variables or indicators are moving over time. These trends can be observed in markets, consumer behavior, production, and other economic activities.
Population pyramids
representation of the age and sex distribution of a population. It typically consists of two back-to-back bar graphs: one showing the number or percentage of males and the other showing females, with age groups represented on the vertical axis. This pyramid is a useful tool for understanding the demographic structure of a population and can reveal trends related to birth rates, death rates, life expectancy, and the overall demographic health of a society.
Commodity prices graph
graph attempting to keep track of prices of commodities most common in international trade.
Resource consumption trade
leveling off or decline of per capita resource consumption in advanced countries. Shows how much water or energy have been consumes on a daily or yearly basis.
Energy Economics
studies how people deal with energy scarcity. Involves both supply and demand, people are wanting to find and exploit low cost energy sources. The best energy source is often expensive but still the best choice when cost is taken into account
Energy sources for electricity
coal and natural gas plants. Mixing generation technologies helps accommodate demand for electricity
Are we running out of energy?
no we have enough energy to last whether that is cheap energy or natural energy.
Elephants
once communities were given property rights to elephants they were able to maintain and protect them.
Fishery management
elephant transportation, forest management, optimal forest harvesting, differences in property rights, limit boat size, limit length of fishing season, policies to limit catch sizes
Fishing and individual transferable qoutas
similar to cap and trade but serves to incentives efficiency.
