Natural Resources Flashcards
1
Q
Classify resources on the basis of their origin.
A
- Biotic resources
These resources are obtained from living organisms such as plants, animals, grasses, herbs, forest products, etc. All biotic resources have the capacity to reproduce and regenerate within a period of time - Abiotic resources
These resources are derived from non-living things such as rocks, soil, land, air, water, minerals, etc. Some abiotic resources such as air and water can regenerate but some of them like minerals can’t . Humans use these resources to directly or indirectly satisfy their needs.
2
Q
Classify resources on the basis of their renewability.
A
- Renewable resources
Land, water, air and sand have the capacity to regenerate and do not get exhausted. Some renewable resources get exhausted after every use but can still regenerate within a period of time. - Non-renewable resources
These resources such as minerals, iron, gold, silver and fossil fuels can get completely exhausted and are not replaceable. Iron, gold and silver can be recycled but fossil fuels cannot.
3
Q
Classify resources on the basis of their stages of development.
A
- Potential resources
These resources are the ones which have not yet been established to their fullest potential. These include the waterfalls in Africa which can be used to generate hydroelectricity in the future. For proper utility of potential resources, a detailed survey of their quality and quantity is required. - Actual resources
These are the resources which have already been developed such as coal and iron ore deposits in India. A survey of quality and quantity has already been done for such resources. The portion of actual resources which can be developed profitably through available technology is called a reserve.
4
Q
Classify resources on the basis of their distribution.
A
- Ubiquitous resources
Found everywhere like sunlight and air. - Localized resources
Found in certain places such as fossil fuels
