Natural Resources Flashcards
Natural resources definition
Naturally occurring components of the earth that humans use
3 categories of natural resources
- Renewable resources
- Non renewable resources
- Flow resources
Renewable resources
Regenerate themselves in a short time(100 years or less)
Non renewable resources
Takes millions of years to regenerate themselves
Flow resources
Always available but must be used when and where they are found
Examples of renewable resources
Water, plants, animals
Examples of non renewable resources
Oil, natural gas, coal, soil
Examples of flow resources
Sunlight, running water, wind
7 problems with harvesting natural resources
- Environmental issues and impact
- Expensive
- Difficult to get to
- Remote
- Dangerous
- Unstable base for our economy
- Cost changes quickly
4 solutions to harvesting natural resources problem
- Better management
- Finding less damaging methods of harvesting
- Only take resources at the rate that they can recover at
- Educate yourself
Canada’s 6 Natural Resources
- Water
- Fossil Fuels
- Forestry
- Fishing
- Mining
- Agriculture
Water
- 7% of the world’s freshwater comes from Canada
- Countries with less water depends on Canada
7 provinces that produce water
PEI
New Brunswick
Nova Scotia

- Formed in the Earth’s crust from decomposing plants and animals
- Found deep underground and underwater
- Non renewable

All countries that are near bodies of water
Mining
- The process of removing usable resources from the ground.
- Gives countries the mineral resources they need to sustain and raise their standard of living.
- 5% of Canada’s gross domestic product and 19% of exports
- Canada is the biggest global exporter of potash
- Employs 200 thousand people
- Essential for the economy
Which provinces produce mining
Every province and territory

- Provides food for families
- Build the economy
- Job opportunities
- 6.2% of land in Canada is used for agriculture
- Canada is the 5th largest exporter
- Sustains our environment
- Supports our economy
- Many sectors rely on agriculture(Eg. Farmers, Processors, Consumers)
4 provinces that produce agriculture + landform + where in the world?
Alberta
Saskatchewan
Manitoba
Ontario
Most common in Interior Plains
Found anywhere in the world with good soil and warm climate
4 Sectors
Primary, Secondary, Tertiary, Quaternary Industries
Primary Industries
- Takes raw materials from the natural environment(often rural areas)
- Eg. Fishing, forestry, farming, mining
- Canada has a lot of them
- Most of Canada’s economy is from primary industries
Secondary Industries
- Takes primary industries products and processes them into finished goods
- Manufacturing occurs at many different stages
- Employs more people than primary industries
- Located in towns and cities across Canada
Tertiary Industries
- Provides a variety of services to support primary and secondary industries, and society
- 3 times as many people work in tertiary industries than primary and secondary combined
- Located in urban centres across Canada
- Sometimes one industry will dominate an area. - Eg. Government in Ottawa
Quaternary Industries
- Providing intellectual services such as technological advancements and innovation
- Eg. Researchers, statistician/data analysts, consultants, software developer, IT specialists
Sector employment in Canada
4% Primary
21% Secondary
75% Tertiary + Quaternary
Types of Industries
Basic & Non Basic Industries
Basic Industries
- Selling goods or services to people outside of the local community
- Bringing new money into the community or local economy
- Eg. manufacturing something in your home town then selling it somewhere else
