Who developed natural law?
Aquinas developed it in the 13th century in his series of writing called summa theologica. He was influenced by Aristotle.
There are four laws in natural law, what are they?
Eternal - God’s law, Devine- The Bible, Natural and Human- government law.
The three goods
Real good- The right use of reason
Apparent good- Believe something is good but takes people away from what God has planned for us.
Highest good- Union with God
What type of theory is it?
- Deontological- based on actions not consequences.
- Absolutist- All actions intrinsically right/wrong.
- Legalistic
What are the 5 primary precepts?
- To live in and ordered society
- To learn
- To praise God
- To defend the innocent
- To reproduce
What is the secondary precepts?
Rules telling us what is right/wrong depending on whether or not they follow the primary precepts.
Natural law a philosophical doctrine..
A philosophical doctrine that states that there is not, moral law, irrespective of time and place, which man can know through his own reason.
Interior and exterior acts?
Interior- motive
exterior- action itself
In order for an act to be truly good, both interior and exterior acts must be right.
what are Virtues there for?
To help us make good moral choices according to Aquinas who took the virtues straight from Aristotle.
What are the Cardinals?
Prudence- Wisdom
Temperance- self control
Fortitude- courage
Justice- being just
Why are the virtues theological/revealed?
Theological because it can only be achieved through divine grace.
Revealed in the bible through faith , hope and charity.
