Who created the theory of Natural Law?
St Thomas Aquinas.
What is the definition of telos?
An end, purpose or goal.
What is Natural Law based on?
Aristotle’s idea that everything has a purpose, revealed in its design and that the fulfilment of telos is the supreme good.
What did Aristotle believe our purpose in life was?
To seek happiness, eudaemonia.
For Aristotle, what is the ‘inner principle’ of human nature?
Reason.
What are the four tiers of the Law?
1) Eternal Law
2) Divine Law
3) Natural Law
4) Human Law
What is eternal law?
The principles by which God made and controls the universe and which are only fully known to God.
What is divine law?
The law of God revealed in the Bible. The Bible is the word of God.
What is natural law?
The moral law of God which has been built into human nature and that is discoverable through the use of reason.
What is human law?
The laws of nations - laws formulated by humans - practical laws.
What does St Paul write that natural law is?
The “law written on our hearts.”
What is the synderesis rule?
“Follow the good, avoid the evil.”
What are the five primary precepts?
Preservation of life Reproduction Live in an Ordered society Worship God Learn - educate the youth
What are the secondary precepts?
These derive from the primary precepts and direct our actions. Primary precepts are always right but secondary are dependent on our own judgements.
What is an “apparent good”?
Something we think is good but we have got it wrong.
What is a “real good”?
We need to use reason correctly and to choose the right thing to do.
