Natural Hazards and Layers of Earth Flashcards
Are all natural hazards predictable? Why or why not?
Not all are predictable because we may not have the right technology or understanding of the disaster.
Giving examples of Geologic and Weather disasters
Geological: Landslides, earthquakes, and volcanic eruptions
Weather: Hurricanes, floods, blizzards
Look at the map that shows natural hazards. Predict whether an area is in danger or not. How do you know?
You can tell whether it is in danger because of past natural hazards, AKA historical data
What is the order of earth’s layers?
Earth’s crust
Mantle
Outer core
Inner core
How does the pressure change from earth’s outermost layer to its innermost layer?
The farther down you go, the more the pressure increases
Look at a model and be able to identify the layer of the earth being pointed out.
N/A
What is the inner core made out of? Solid, liquid, or in between?
The inner core is made out of iron and nickel. It’s solid
What is the outer core made out of?
Solid, liquid, or in between?
The outer core is a liquid layer of iron, nickel, sulphur, and oxygen
What is the mantle made out of?
Solid, liquid, or in between?
This layer is made out of lithosphere, asthenosphere, and mesosphere. Rocks are partially melted and move slowly.
What is earth’s crust made out of?
Solid, liquid, or in between?
The crust is made out of oceanic and continental crust. Oceanic crust is liquid, continental crust is solid
What are convection currents? Draw a model
The natural process of heat transfer involving the movement of energy and heat from one place to another. (Search up image)

How can you predict natural hazards? (3 ways)
Scientific understanding, historical data, and data monitoring
What is the difference between Geologic and Weather Disasters?
Geological has to do with the earth while weather disasters has to do with extreme weather.
What is a geological disaster?
A geological disaster occurs when natural processes within or on the earth impact on our activities, either through death, injury, or through economic loss.
