Natural Hazards Flashcards
What is a natural hazard?
A natural event that threatens people or has the potential to cause damage, destruction or death
Name the types of natural hazards
Tectonic Hazards (earthquake) Weather Hazards (hurricane) Climate Change (global warming)
Name three types of tectonic hazards
- Earthquakes
- Tsunami’s
- Volcanoes
What is a conservative plate margin
Where two tectonic plate margins slide past each other
What is a constructive plate margin
Where two tectonic plates move apart which means the rising magma comes up, adds new material to plates
What is a destructive plate margin
Where two tectonic plates are coming together and an oceanic plate is sub-ducted (submerge). It can be associated with violent and explosive earthquakes.
Give two social impacts of Chile and Nepal’s earthquake
Chile:
500 killed, 12000 injured
220000 homes + 4500 schools destroyed
Nepal:
9000 dead, 20000 injured (1/3 population affected)
50% shops destroyed (shortage of food)
Give two economic impacts of Chile and Nepal’s earthquake
Chile:
Cost $30 billion USD
Nepal:
Cost $5 billion USD
Give two environmental impacts of Chile and Nepal’s earthquake
Chile:
Landslides + Tsunami’s = destroyed homes
Fire and chemical plant near Santiago
Nepal:
Mt. Everest Landslide + Avalanche = 19 people dead
Gandaki river residents evacuated = flooding
Give two immediate response for Chile and Nepal’s earthquake
Chile:
In 10 days, 90% homes restored power + water
National Appeal raised $60 million = build 30,000 shelters
Nepal:
UK, India + China provided search and rescue teams
Helicopters rescued people from Mt. Everest avalanche
Give two long term responses for Chile and Nepal’s earthquake
Chile: 1 month later = 200,000 house holds built Strong economy (copper extracts)
Nepal:
June 2015, seek financial help from other countries
Repair Everest base camp (2015 Aug open to public) +Tourism = boost economy
