Natural Hazards Flashcards
What Is A Natural Event?
A natural event threatens people and have the potential to harm people, cause damage, destruction and death.
What are the 4 types of plate Boundary?
There are collision, Conservative, Constructive and Destructive.
What Happens In a Constructive plate boundary?
Two plates move apart from each other causing a gap to appear. Lava rises up from the mantle to fill the gap. This creates new land.
What happens in a Conservative plate margin?
Two plates try to move side by side. Friction makes them stick so movement is very difficult.
Pressure builds up steadily.
The pressure gets great so a catastrophic slip
occurs.
What happens in a Collision plate margin?
Two continental plates move together.
They are equally dense so neither can sink.
Sedimentary rocks between the plates are pushed upwards.
What happens in a destructive plate margin?
An ocean crust moves towards a continental crust.
Denser oceanic crust is forced down below the continental crust.
The Oceania plate is destroyed in the mantle and magma rises up.
What are the two scales of measuring earthquakes?
They are the Richter scale and the Mercalli Intensity.
