Give an example of a natural hazard
Floods, hurricanes, earthquakes, volcanoes, tsunamis (and many more)
How does a natural hazard become a natural disaster?
It becomes a natural disaster when the loss of life and damage to property becomes too great for the people affected to cope with on their own
What are each of the layers called?
- Crust
- Mantle
- Outer core
- Inner core
What are earthquakes and volcanoes caused by?
What is the earths crust made of?
Rock
What does the earths crust ‘float’ on?
It ‘floats’ on the semi-solid rock of the mantle
What are the sections of the earths broken crust called?
What are the edges of tectonic plates called?
Plate boundaries
What are A, B and C?
A: Crater
B: Vent
C: Magma chamber
What is Tephra?
Lumps of solid magma and mountainside raining down out of the sky (volcanic bombs)
What are lahars?
Fast flowing rivers of mud and ash
What are pyroclastic flows?
Burning poisonous flows of gas and ash that can rain down the volcano sides at speeds of 200m/s and have temperatures of 750oC
What are lava flows?
These are rivers of running lava. They destroy everything in their path
What are landslides?
Earthquakes during the eruption can cause land to slide
