Natural Hazards Flashcards
What is a natural hazard?
An event over which people have little control. It poses as a threat to people’s lives and their possesions.
What are the different types of Hazards?
Tectonic, geomorphological, atmospherical, biological [CLIMACTIC/ WEATHER]
What is a tectonic hazard?
Threats caused by the movement of tectonic plates
Name the tectonic hazards
- Volcano eruptions
- Earthquakes
- Avalanches
- Tsunamis
- Land slides
Name the weather hazards
- Floods
- Tropical storms
- Droughts
- Tornadoes
- Wildfires
- Blizzards
What are the factors affecting hazard risk?
1) Frequency/ size of the hazard
2) Demographic (i.e age, gender)
3) Capacity to cope
4) Population growth
5) Level of urbanisation
6) Level of economic development
What are the two types of plates?
Continental, oceanic
Name the properties of oceanic and continental waves
Continental:
Oceanic:
What are 3 ways the plates move + and what are the definitions of the processes?
Convection cells =
Slab pull =
Ridge rush =
What is a plate margin/plate boundary?
The site where 2 or more tectonic plates meet
What are the 4 plate boundaries + definitions
Destructive =
Constructive =
Conservative =
Collision =
What are some reasons for living in areas at risk of tectonic hazards?
- People are too poor to move
- Volcanic soil can be more fertile for farming
- The level of risk may have only increased after moving there
- Hazards are unpredictable
- Tourism provides work opportunities
- Family/ traditional land or inherited - emotional
- Geothermal energy from volcanoes
What are the factors that affect risk perception?
- Level of education
- Culture
- SocioEconomic
- Past experiences of hazardous events
