Natural Hazards Flashcards
What is a natural hazard?
A natural hazard is a natural process which can cause death, injury or disruption to humans, or destroy possessions. (not have to have taken place yet)
What is a natural disaster?
A natural disaster is a natural hazard which has already happened.
What are the THREE main types of natural hazards? And what are they?
Three of the main types of natural hazards are geological hazards, atmospheric hazards and tectonic hazards.
Tectonic hazards are caused by the movement of tectonic plates in the earths crust. Eg. earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanic eruptions.
Geological hazards are caused by processes within or on the earths surface. Eg. Volcanic eruptions, earthquakes and landslides.
Atmospheric hazards are caused by weather and climate. Eg. Tropical storm, tornados, hurricanes, droughts, heatwaves
Geological hazards and atmospheric hazards and tectonic hazards are the three types of —— hazards?
Geological hazards and atmospheric hazards and tectonic hazards are three of the main types of NATURAL HAZARDS.
Factors that affect the hazard risk from natural hazards?
In other words: What are some of the factors which affect how bad a country will be affected by a natural hazard?
Try get around 6
Some of the factors which can affect how bad a country is affected by a natural hazard are:
HUMAN FACTORS:
Countries population
Whether country is a HIC or a LIC
How the country can cope with extreme events based on its history
NATURAL FACTORS:
type of natural hazard country is faced with
frequency and magnitude (size) of natural hazard
Physical geography of the area: mountainous, landlocked, island etc.
What does the term “primary effects” mean regarding natural hazards? (1)
Primary effects of a natural hazard are the immediate impacts caused.
What does the term “secondary effects” mean regarding natural hazards? (1)
Secondary effects of a natural hazard are impacts which happen later as a result of the primary effect.
What do the primary effects of a natural hazard include?
Primary effects (immediate) of a natural hazard include things like: deaths and injuries, destruction to infrastructure, crops and water supplies damaged / contaminated.
What do the secondary effects of a natural hazard include?
Secondary effects of a natural hazard include things like a countries economy becoming weakened, initial hazard can trigger other hazards, lack of sanitation due to contaminated water could lead to diseases spreading, population decrease.
What are the immediate responses to natural hazards?
Some of the immediate responses to natural hazards include: evacuating people, treating the injured and rescues, foreign governments providing money and aid workers.
What are the long term responses to natural hazards?
Some of the long term responses to natural hazards include: retrofitting infrastructure, repairing infrastructure, improving evacuation plans and forecasts.
