Natural hazards Flashcards
What is a natural hazard?
A natural event or phenomenon that poses a
threat to human life or has a social impact – if it does not pose a threat to people it is not classified as a hazard.
What are the three types of natural hazards?
Hydrological, Atmospheric/Climactic, Geological
What is an Atmospheric/Climactic Hazard?
Storms / droughts / wind / snow / fog / tornadoes
What is a Geological Hazard?
Earthquakes / volcanic eruption / avalanches / tsunamis
What is a Hydrological Hazard?
floods / storm surges / tsunamis
What % of fatalities are Hydrological Hazards?
66
What % of fatalities are Meteorological Hazards?
17
What % of fatalities are Geological Hazards?
11
What % of fatalities are Climatological Hazards?
6
What are the layers of the Earth’s Interior?
Crust, Mantle, Outer Core, Inner Core.
Who came up with Continental Drift?
Alfred Wegener
What is Slab Pull?
as the crust subducts into the mantle gravity will pull the plate further into the mantle. The weight of the plate behind it will also push it down further.
What is Ridge Pull?
warm magma rises from the core and will PUSH the plates at the top upward (ridge push) as the plates stop the material rising further. This means the magma then moves out sideways taking the crust along with it. The magma begins to cool at the surface of the mantle before sinking back down to the bottom to be heated again.
Slab pull = as the crust subducts into the mantle gravity will pull the plate further into the mantle. The weight of the plate behind it will also push it down further.
