The process happened gradually as wolves became more comfortable with humans. Eating the human scraps. Eventually humans encouraged the wolves to stay and then eventually bred them to encourage certain traits.

As a source of meat.

As they were small and thin they were able to hunt rabbits as they could fit into there burrows.

For lab experiments.
