natural ecosystems Flashcards
What is an ecosystem?
An ecosystem consists of all biotic and abiotic components, living together in an area
what is population?
Population is the organisms of one specific species living in a defined area at the same time
what is community?
Community is groups of populations, of different species living together in the same area and interacting with each other
what is habitat?
Habitat is a place within an ecosystem where an organism lives
what is niche?
This is the role of species within an ecosystem
what are examples of biotic factors?
Animals, plants, competition, and human activity
what is an example of abiotic factors in an ecosystem?
Soil, climate, and local factors
what is a food chain?
A food chain describes the relationship between a single producer, and its primary secondary and tertiary consumers
what is a food web?
A food web describes the relationship between multiple producers, and their primary secondary and tertiary consumers
what is trophic level?
This is the feeding level within a food chain
what does the pyramid of numbers represent?
This represents the number of individuals at each trophic level with larger numbers, consisting of producers and smaller numbers, consisting of the secondary and tertiary consumers like carnivores
what are the advantages of the pyramid of numbers?
This is an easy method to obtain information about the number of individuals in an ecosystem
This also is good for comparing changes in populations within the ecosystem throughout the year between different seasons
What are the disadvantages of pyramid of numbers?
The numbers of a specific species may be two great to accurately record
This also does not take into account the juvenile or immature forms species
What is the pyramid of energy?
The pyramid of energy shows the flow of energy through each trophic level, and the input of solar energy may be indicated as an extra layer at the base
only 10% of the previous energy passes to the next level
what are the advantages of the pyramid of energy?
The advantages is that there are no inverted pyramids. It shows the rate of production in ecosystems, and it can be compared to different ecosystems based on relative energy flows
