natural disasters T3 Flashcards
What is it called when the water recedes before a tsunami?
Drawback
How fast can tsunamis travel
Over 500 mph
How high can tsunamis travel
100ft or 30.48meters
How are tsunamis created?
(Scientific wording)
Tectonic upthrust in the form of earthquakes and ocean floor volcanoes cause vast quantities of water to be displaced in a very short amount of time, generating massive amounts of energy.
what is an upthrust?
The upward force that a liquid or gas exerts on a body floating in it.
what is the name of a series of tsunami waves?
wave train
the word tsunami means.
Harbour wave
what is a mega tsunami?
They are caused by something large dropping into the water e.g. Volcano landslide
What is the difference between a tsunami and a mega tsunami?
A tsunami has to happen out at sea and a mega tsunami is from something large dropping in it.
The distance between waves is the
Wavelength
How is a tsunami formed?
movement of the ocean surface due to earthquakes, landslides on the sea floor, large volcanic eruptions or meteorite impact in the ocean the energy from it travels upwards but gravity pulls it down and displaces it at each side because it can’t go anywhere else then the energy travels with the wave and in deeper water it is smaller but very fast but when it gets into shallow water it slows down and gets bigger.
what is wave shoaling?
Wave shoaling is the change in shape and behavior as waves propagate into water of decreasing depth
people have attempted to prevent tsunamis with
flood gates, seawalls and canals
How many layers of the earth are there name them all.
There are four layers
The Crust
The mantle
The outercore
The innercore
What is a fault line
