natural Flashcards
DNA
extremely long macromolecule that is the main component of chromosomes and is the material that transfers genetic characteristics in all life forms, constructed of two nucleotide strands coiled around each other in a ladderlike arrangement with the sidepieces composed of alternating phosphate and deoxyribose units and the rungs composed of the purine and pyrimidine bases adenine, guanine, cytosine, and thymine
Chargaff’s rules
states that DNA from any cell of all organisms should have a 1:1 ratio (base Pair Rule) of pyrimidine and purine bases and, more specifically, that the amount of guanine is equal to cytosine and the amount of adenine is equal to thymine.
Watson and crick
discoverd the double helix of dna
Rosalind franklin
Rosalind Franklin’s X-ray studies of molecules played a crucial role in the 1953 discovery of the structure of DNA.
mutations
sudden departure from the parent type in one or more heritable characteristics, caused by a change in a gene or a chromosome.
adaption
any alteration in the structure or function of an organism or any of its parts that results from natural selection and by which the organism becomes better fitted to survive and multiply in its environment.
species
class of individuals having some common characteristics or qualities; distinct sort or kind.
evolution
any process of formation or growth
fossils
any remains, impression, or trace of a living thing of a former geologic age, as a skeleton, footprint
fossils record
the past of fossils collected
darwin
seaport in and the capital of Northern Territory, in N Australia
selective breeding
intentional mating of two animals in an attempt to produce offspring with desirable characteristics or for the elimination of a trait
Natrual selection
selecting unknown
generation time
the generation time is the average time between two consecutive generations in the lineages of a population
speciation
formation of new species as a result of geographic, physiological, anatomical, or behavioral factors that prevent previously interbreeding populations from breeding with each other
