Natuarl Hazards (Geography) Flashcards
What are plate boundaries?
The edges where 2 plates meet e.g. volcanoes, earthquakes
Convergent plate boundaries
2 plates collide often resulting in 1 plate slipping under the other one
Diverget/ constructive plate boundaries
2 plates move away from each other
2 types of crust
Oceanic and Continental
oceanic crust is
thin and young but dense
continental crust is
old and thicker but less dense
why do plates move?
because of convection currents and tectonic activities
mitigation
is the action of reducing the severity or seriousness of a hazard or trying to stop the hazard all together
what do mangrove forests do?
they absorb the energy of large waves and the storm surge
what is a track
a track is the direction the strom moves
what is a secondary effect
A secondary effect is the consequence of a primary effect
what is a primary effect
The direct consequence of a hazard
what is a long term effect
effect that continues for months or years
what is a short term effect
effect that only lasts for days or weeks
why do strom surges occur
because of intense low pressure caused by the storm that cause the water to bulge
