Natrual resources Flashcards
(9 cards)
What is a natural resource?
Any feature or part of the environment that can be used to meet human needs
What is a biotic resource?
A resource composed of organic material such as living organisms (trees), products (sap/bark) or remains(coal).
what is an abiotic resource?
A resource composed of non-organic, non-living material (water).
what is a renewable resource?
Resources that are inexhaustible (solar energy), or those that are replenished naturally at a sufficient rate for sustainable extraction to take place within a meaningful human time frame
What is a non-renewable resource?
Resources with a finite quantity (uranium), or which do not replenish at a sufficient rate for sustainable extraction to take place within a meaningful human time-frame (oil)
Give examples of renewable biotic resources
• Plants: - Wheat, maize, soy beans - Oak, Beech wood - Palm oil, sunflower oil - Plant waste for biomass • Animals: - Sheep, cattle
Give examples of renewable a-biotic resources
• Renewable electricity: - Solar power - Geothermal power - Wind power - Hydro-electric power • Water
Give examples of non-renewable biotic resources
• Fossil fuels: - Coal - Oil - Natural gas • Sedimentary rocks - Chalk - Limestone
Give examples of non-renewable abiotic resources
• Uranium - nuclear power • Building materials: - Sand - Igneous rocks (e.g. Granite) - Ores (e.g. Iron ore, Bauxite)
