An act which aimed to reverse the damaging assimilation policies of the Dawes Act, to promote trival self-governance andd the preservation of Native American culture
What was the Indian Claims Commission 1946?
An act establishedd to address historical grievances concerning treaty breaches and land seizures done by the US government
What was the Civil Rights Act of 1968? (Indian Civil Rights Act)
An act which extended many bill of rights for tribal governments to ensure civil rights of Natives on reservations
What was the Indian Self-Determination and Education Assistance Act 1975?
It was an act which empowered tribal governments to contract the fed government to administer programmes
What was the American Indian Religious Freedom Act of 1978?
It was an act that protected the rights of Natives to practice their religions and use sacred sites
What was the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) of 1990?
An act that returned cultural items and human remains to the rightful tribes
What was the American Indian Movement (AIM)?
A civil rights group dedicated to bring attention to Native American grievances

It symbolised Native American resistance and raised awareness of issues considering tribal sovereignty and land rights

An act which protected Native American children from being removed from their families and tribes

The act that broke up tribal landds into individual allotments which led to lots of lost Native land
How did Boarding Schools force assimilation?
Native children were taken to board schools which would change their names, hair and language, and ban their culture and religion
What was the Termination Policy (1940’s-60’s)?
A policy to terminate federal recognition of tribal sovereignty, resulting in loss land and resources
Why did economic dependence on the USA hold back the activism of Native Americans?
It meant Natives could not survive without their support, so couldn’t be separate
How did WW1 negatively impact Natives?
Wartime demands led to further exploitation of Natives for resources
How did WW2 negatively impact Natives?
While it offered jobs, it contributed to the relocation of Natives and the Termination Policy
