What is a Nation?
A nation is a group of people who have common circumstances of birth with a collective goal based on national identity.
What is a State?
•A defined territory where there is a centre of sovereignty.
What does Max Weber argue a state is?
a territory within which a central body claims the legitimate use of violence (force).
What are three differences between a Nation and a State?
- A nation is a self-identifying community that does not necessarily have sovereignty, whereas a state is a political entity with sovereignty.
- A nation is not necessarily recognised by the international community.
- A nation does not necessarily possess a state whereas a state could contain more than one nation or community
- A nation does not need defined territory, whereas a state does
- Nations can live in more than one state, whereas states cannot cross boundaries to other states
Give an example of a nation and some facts about them.
The Kurds-
• Republic of Turkey against Kurdish insurgent groups
• Created a nation named Rojava- aiming to create democratic sovereign state
• Fight against ISIS- used to get given weapons by America
What is a Nation-State?
A self-determining state that represents the political wishes of a nation and has authority and legitimate recognition on a global scale

Not recognised politically by anyone other than turkey.
