nationalism and the state Flashcards
disagree over how the nation state should be governed
expansionist nationalists -Maurras take on a more chauvinistic approach-some ppl are better than others due to nationality or race.
-so say democracy is bad as ppl can’t make decisions for themselves.
-‘For a monarchy to work 1 person has to be wise. For democracy to work everyone has to be wise. Which is more likely?’
-liberal nationalists state should be governed by rule of law & democracy
e.g criticised the paris commune 1848 based on this premise as it was undemocratic.
Woodrow Wilson wanted to join the league of nations but upheld democracy and didn’t join as elected congress didn’t consent.
post colonials disagree w each other on how state should be governed =Garvey-self sufficient/iscolationist nation but president of Ghana was also a post colonial nationalist & was close w Queen Elizabeth II-represented everything post-colonials stood against.
-much more important than the small agreement previously mentioned -as it talks about what the nation should acc look like.
agree on correct form of govt is nation state
-cons nationalists -von Herder- ‘volksgeist’ -national spirit -can only be fostered in the nation state as a form of governance -ppl are nostalgic & emotional & this sentiment can be captured in patriotism.
lib nationalists agree -Rousseau -‘social contract’ argued the state can only be governed by the ‘national will’ -govt has to be accountable to the ppl.
-post colonials agree -Garvey’s -‘pan africanism’ believes social beliefs shouldn’t be the deciding factor, race should be.
-believe in colourism -oppressive ‘white man’ in conflict w the interests of the nation, so nations should be segregated by race -‘Africa for the Africans’. this is cause he believes ppl of the same race understand eachother and have their best interests at heart.
-shown in independence movement in India-Ghandi’s started a movement to get rid of British colonial rule in India, in favour of the Indian ppl themselves.
-the agreement is basic and foundational so holds no real significance. -superficial.
disagree over what position the nation state should take in the world after its established
cons nationalists-sceptical of those outside the nation state.
herder-national character each state had
lib nationalists believe in self determination-state reps nations ability to make own decisions-freedom. -allows the ppl to be free & Rousseau argued it helps ensure their liberties.
-Wilson’s 14 points speech-1918-little econ barriers between nations -commitment to free trade to promote peace and prosperity.
-countries independent organisms but cooperation is good to maintain global peace.
-rejected by expansionist nationalists who believe their nation is superior so should expand territory into other nation states. -Hitler-Lebenstraum-living space-G expanded as they viewed themselves as superior.
