What is nationalism?

It is the sense of belonging to and identifying with a nation. It is based on the idea that people who share a common culture, ethnic background and history should be allowed to govern themselves. The feeling of loyalty and collective action in nationalism motivated them to fight for independence, overthrow their oppressors and celebrate their own cultures. Once self rule is achieved, nationalism can bind a nation together with feelings of pride.
