Volksgeist
The spirit that binds a people together, based on language, culture, shared history or intellectual superiority.
patriotism
A sense of shared national pride in the values of a nation.
Liberal/civic nationalism
Regards the nation as tied together by shared political principles or beliefs, including the principle of popular sovereignty
Nativism
A form of nationalism that distinguishes between the ‘native’ population of a country and immigrant groups who have recently arrived.
Chauvinism
An exaggerated form of patriotism and national pride that sees one’s country as superior to others.
Xenophobia
A fear or hatred of foreigners; pathological ethnocentrism.
Nation-state
A sovereign political association within which citizenship and nationality overlap.
Empire
A structure of domination within which cultural ethnic or nation groups are subjected to a single source of authority.
Self-determination
The principle that each nation should respect the values and sovereignty of other nations provided these values do not pose a direct threat to other nations.
Ethnic nationalism
A form of nationalism driven by a sense of ethnic distinctiveness and seeks to preserve it.
Primordialism
The belief that nations are ancient and deep-rooted, fashioned out of psychology, culture and biology.
