National sustainable transport options for the UK Flashcards
What is the aim of sustainable transport systems
Reduce the amount of greenhouse gasses emitted by transport
What are the sustainable transport options
- Congestion Charge
- Car sharing schemes
- Cities encouraging people to cycle more
- Designated Cycle/walking paths
- Improving public transport systems
- The use of reduced of zero emission vehicles
- Park and ride scheemes
Develop Congestion Charge
The practice of making people pay to travel into large urban ares during periods of heaviest use. LONDON CC WAS INTRODUCED IN 2003. INITIALLY MOTORISTS WERE CHARGED £5, NOW £11.50.
It aims to reduce the number of vehicles in the cites which will reduce traffic congestion and so lower pollution. It encourages people to cycle, walk or public transport. TRAFFIC LEVELS HAVE REDUCED BY 10% IN FIRST 10 YEAS IN LDN. AIR POLLUTANTS REDUCED BY 15%.
Develop Car sharing schemes
Run by local autoritiesdcar journeys reducing the number of cars on the road –> reduces pollutants.
Develop cities encouraging people to cycle more
Cities are encouraging people to cycle more, e.g. the ‘BIRMINGHAM CYCLE REVOLUTION CAMPAIGN’ WHICH AIMS TO HAVE 10% OF ALL TRIPS TO THE CITY MADE BY BIKE BY 2033. Cycling doesn’t use fossil fuels which helps reduce greenhouse gasses –> climate change reduction
Develop designated cycle and walking paths
This encourages people to cycle or walk instead of drive reducing congestion and pollution
Develop improving public transport systems
Improving public transport such as busses, trams and trains means that more people will want to use it instead of drive. Busses and trains use less fuel per head than cars in most circumstances –> reduces air pollution
Develop the use of reduced of zero emission vehicles
An example is IN BIRMINGHAM THE CITY COUNCIL HAS SUPPORTED THE USE OF HYBRID BUSSES WHICH COULD SAVE 378 TONES OF CARBON EVERY YEAR. This is because hybrid/electric vehicles use less energy and produce less carbon emissions than normal vehicles –> less air pollution
Develop park and ride schemes
Park and ride schemes allow shoppers to park their cars in large designated parking areas on the edge of urban areas areas and catch a bus into the town centre. Park and ride OPERATES IN 87 TOWNS AND CITIES WITHIN THE UK. APPROXIMATELY 40 PEOPLE WILL TRAVEL ON ONE BUSS RATHER THAN IN 40 SEPARATE VEHICLES RESULTING IN MUCH LESS CONGESTION THAN POLLUTION
