National grid and transformers Flashcards
How do power stations work
By generating loads of heat and then converting the thermal energy into electrical energy
how much electricity does a power station generate
there is no fixed amount that a power station will generate it is based on the demand of how much electricity is needed
what is the equasion for power
P=V x I
Power=Voltage x Current
What does a step-up Transformer do
It increases the voltage to 400,000 Volts(V)
What is the purpose of over head wires and underground wires
To transmit the electricity brought to it by a step-up transformer all across the country between huge pylons then it goes to a step-down transformer
What does a step-down transformer do
It decreases the voltage to 230 Volts(V) that is then outputed by your houses plug sockets
Why do we need to use a step-down transformer
1.High voltages are very dangerous
2.It would overload the appliances in our houses
What is the national grid
The national grid a series of step-up transformers, wires, step-down transformers
What are over head cables attached to
Pylons
