National Grid Flashcards
What is the national grid?
A system of transformers and cables
Why are transformers used in the national grid?
To increase the efficiency of electricity transmission by reducing the heating effect in the wires.
This is achieved by increasing the voltage and decreasing the current of the electricity in the power cables
What is the national grid used for?
Supplying electricity to houses from powerstations
What do step-up transformers do?
Increase the voltage
Reduce the current
What do step-down transformers do?
Decreases voltage
Increases current
Why are step up transformers used?
To reduce energy loss from cables (thermal)
Why are step down transformers used?
To reduce the potential difference to make it safe for domestic use.
