Associations of nasal polyps
Asthma
Aspirin sensitivity
Infective sinusitis
Cystic fibrosis
Kartagener’s syndrome
Churg-Strauss syndrome
Association of asthma, aspirin sensitivity and nasal polyposis = Samter’s triad
Features
Nasal obstruction
Rhinorrhoea and sneezing
Poor sense taste/smell
Investigations include anterior rhinoscopy and nasal endoscopy
Unusual features e.g. unilateral or bleeding (may indicate malignancy) – require further investigation – referral to ENT specialist
Management
All patients with suspected polyps referred ENT for full examination
Topical corticosteroids shrink polyps in 80% patients
If non-responsive to treatment – intranasal or endoscopic polypectomy (endoscopic if further in nose/sinuses)
