Cultural Appropriation
The use of some element of another culture or aspect of cultural identity (often without knowing its significance).
Nondiegetic
Music or sounds that cannot be heard by the characters. These sounds are meant only for us, the viewers, & can often tell us additional information about the scene.
Diegesis
The “world” of the film.
Leitmotif
A recurring theme in a musical composition associated with a particular person, idea, or situation.
Ethnicity
Bound by shared culture such as social customs, values, & beliefs.
Diegetic
Music or sounds that exist in the world of the characters/film. These are sounds the characters can hear & interact with.
Patronage System
Wealthy individuals funding art.
Pastiche
The direct borrowing from previous styles/eras & crafting it within the current trends/styles.
Imagined Communities
Refers to a socially-constructed community made by the people themselves.
Underscore
A term used specifically for music accompanying a scene.
Exoticism
The use of musical material that evokes the idea of distant cultures & locals, not the actual music of that country/culture.
