NaOH Metal Tests Flashcards
What does aluminium (Al3+) make when mixed with Sodium Hydroxide (NaOH)
A white precipitate, then when NAOH is in excess, it dissolves into a colourless solution.
What does magnesium (Mg2+) make when mixed with Sodium Hydroxide (NaOH)
A white precipitate and is insoluble in excess NaOH.
What does Calcium (Ca2+) form when mixed with NaOH?
A white precipitate even in excess NaOH.
What does Iron 2+ make when mixed with Sodium Hydroxide (NaOH)?
A green precipitate as it is insoluble to the excess NaOH.
What does Iron 3+ (Fe3+) make when dissolved in NaOH?
a brown precipitate as it is insoluble.
What does copper 2+ (Cu2+) make when added to NaOH?
a light blue precipitate.
How do you carry out a sodium hydroxide test?
Small amounts are added first of NaOH solution at first to see the reaction not in excess, then it is added in excess to see how the hydroxide chemical reacts with sodium hydroxide.
What do sodium hydroxide tests test for?
Test for metal cations (positive ions)
