Nanotechnology Flashcards
What is Nanotechnology?
It is the production, study and control of tiny particles on a nanoscale (1 to 100 nanometres).
What can nanoparticles be used for?
They can be used to modify the properties of other materials, especially polymers.
Give an example.
Silver nanoparticles can be used to give fibres in clothing antibacterial properties. This can help to stop your socks from smelling
Give another example.
Adding carbon nanotubes to sports equipment like tennis rackets and golf clubs can make them lighter, stiffer and stronger.
What are people worried about with nanotechnology?
Nanotechnology is a new science and people are worried that these new materials haven’t been thoroughly tested and could lead to health problems in the future.
How are claims made by scientists checked before they are accepted by the scientific community?
Claims made by any one scientist are critically evaluated by other scientists before they are accepted by the scientific community.
