Nanenclature Flashcards
Empirical formula
The simplest ration of whole number atoms of each element in a compound
Molecular Formula
A molecular formula is the actual number of atoms of each element in a molecule
Structural formula
shows the atoms carbon by carbon with the attached hydrogens and functional groups eg CH3CH3
Displayed formula
shows how all the atoms are arranged and all the bonds between them
Homologous series
organic compounds which have the same general formula and similar chemical properties eg alkanes are CnH(2n+2) and alkenes are CnH2n
functional groups
the reactive part of a molecule eg alcohols is OH and alkenes are C=C
Chain Isomers
have different arrangements of the carbon skeleton, this means that there is the same amount of carbon arranged in a different way eg butane and methylpropane
Positional Isomers
have the same skeleton and the same atoms but the atom or groups of atoms are attached to a different carbon eg 1-chlorobutane and 2-chlorobutane
Functional group isomers
have the same atoms arranged into a different functional group eg hex-1-ene and cyclohexane
what is the IUPAC system
it is used to name organic compounds
Straight chain alkanes
1-meth 2-eth 3-prop 4-but 5-pent 6-hex
Branched alkanes
1-methyl 2-ethyl 3-propyl 4-butyl 5-pentyl 6-hexyl
