Naming Rules Flashcards
STUDY
Naming Binary Ionic Compounds of Type I (4 things)
-Cation first, anion second
-No need to specify number
-Monoatomic anion takes suffix ide
-monoatomic cation is same as parent element
Naming Binary Ionic Compounds of Type II (3 things)
-use roman numerals to indicate the charge of the cation
-higher charge = ic and lower charge = ous
-there are exceptions
EXCEPTIONS??(5)
Cd2+, Zn2+, Al3+, Ga3+ and Ag+ (FORM ONE ION)
Naming Ionic Polyatomic Compounds (4 things)
-*exception for Mercury –> Hg22+ = Mercury I ; Hg2+ = Mercury II
-least oxygen atoms = its ; most oxygen atoms = ate
-hypo-ite, ite, ate, per-ate for oxygen and ANY halogen
-thio = presence of sulfur
Naming Binary Covalent Compounds
-first element is named first with ENITRE name
-second element named as though anion
-NUMBER prefixes for both EXCEPT for the first one if there is one
