what does simple, compound, or complex refer to?
the top number of the time signature and how the notes get divided.
what do duple, triple, and quadruple stand for?
how many beats are in the measure.
what is the meter for 4/4
simple (quarter into 2 eighths) quadruple (four beats per measure)
what meter is 3/4?
simple (quarter into 2 eighths) triple (three beats per measure)
what meter is 2/4?
simple (quarter into 2 eighths) duple (two beats in a measure)
what does “simple” tell the musician?
each note can be divided by 2 (a quarter -> 2 eighths)
what does “compound” tell the musician?
each note is divided by 3 (one dotted quarter -> 3 eighths)
what meter is 6/8?
compound (dotted quarter -> 3 eighths per beat) duple (2 beats per measure)
what meter is 9/8?
compound (dotted quarter-> 3 eighths) triple (3 beats per measure)
what meter is 12/8?
compound (dotted quarter -> 3 eighths) quadruple (4 beats per measure)
what makes a meter complex?
it cannot fit into duple, triple, or quadruple.
what meter is 5/8?
complex (can’t fit into duple or triple, odd number of eighths)
what meter is 11/8?
complex (can’t fit into duple or triple, odd number of eighths)
