Naming Ionic Compounds Flashcards
1
Q
Formula > Name
If it is a metal (or ammonium) that only forms one ion*
A
Name the metal than name the anion
CaCl2- calcium chloride
2
Q
Formula > Name
If the metal forms more than one ion
A
The figuore out rhe charge on the metal. Name the metal and the anion and put the charge on the metal in paranthases after the metal
Fe(ClO4)2- iron (II) perchlorate
Cr2O3- chromium (III) oxide
3
Q
Name > Formula
Write the formula for the ions involved
A
Then figure out how those ions combine to form a neutral compound
Sodium oxide- Na+ and O2- = Na2O
Iron(III) sulfate- Fe3+ and SO4^-2 Fe2(SO4)3
