Naming Formulas Flashcards
Molecular compounds
Form from two or more non-metals
Ionic compounds
Form between a metal and a non metal
Ionic
Type 1 binary
Charge on cation does not vary
Name of cation + base name of anion + ide
Ionic
Type 2 binary
Charge on cation varies
Name of cation + charge of cation + base name of anion + ide
Ionic compounds w/ poly atomic ions
Name of cation (type I, type II, rule) + name of anion (polyatomic ion)
Naming molecular compounds
Type II binary compounds
Heals together by covalent bonds
Prefix + name of first element + prefix + base name of second element + ide
Rule- if first element has one atom “mono” is not needed
Rule 2- if prefix places two vowels next to one another “a” or “o” drop the end of the prefix
Naming acids
Binary acids
Include hydrogen and another non metal that isnt oxygen
Hydro + base name of non-metal + ic + acid
Naming acids
Oxyacids
Acid that includes oxygen, hydrogen, and non metal
-if name of any anion ends in “ite”, then base name of oxyanion + “ous” + acid
-if name of any anion ends in “ate”, then base name of oxyanion + “ic” + acid
( ite -> ous )
( ate -> ic )
Naming hydrates
Any compound that contains water
Name of compound + # of water molecules + hydrate
Find Molecular formula with molar mass and empirical formula
(Molar mass / Molar mass of empirical formula)=x
(Empirical formula)(x)= molecular formula
