Naming different sampling methods Flashcards
Bias
statistic from the sample collection is systemically skewed from the parameter of the population
Sample Variability
How much an estimate varies between different samples. Happens naturally from using different sampling methods polling different things.
Population
What group we want to know more about
Sample
Representative subset of population
Voluntary response
When the sample is made by those who elect to take part in the survey
Convenience
Not everyone has an equally likely chance of being in the sample
Undercoverage
When a part of the overall population is left out of the sample
Why not a census?
- Long time
- Expensive
- Population can change
Non-response
Participants are unwilling or unable to be part of the sample
Response
Participants are likely to respond falsely
Biased wording
Wording of questions influences accuracy of survey.
Simple random
Everyone equally likely to be selected
Stratified
Group in similar groups and randomly sample from each group
Cluster
Group in similar groups and sample an entire group
Systematic
Survey every nth
