A

(Name of cation) + (charge in roman numerals if applicable) + (base name of anion + ide)

A

The formula is the same for an ionic compound with the addition of (prefix referring to the number of water molecules) hydrate.

What are the rules for naming a binary covalent compound?

A
  1. Write the first element’s name in its entirety (usually the one furthest left and down on the periodic table)
  2. Write the second element’s name as though it were an anion (base name + ide).
  3. Modify each element with a numerical prefix (same as the hydrates)

A
  1. Start with the prefix hydro
  2. Add the base name of the counterion
  3. Add the suffix ic at the end
  4. Include the word acid.

What are the rules for naming oxygen-containing polyatomic anions (oxoacids)?

A
  1. If the name ends with ate, change the acid name to ic.
  2. If the name ends with ite, change the acid name to ous.
  3. If the name includes a hypo or a per, transfer it to the acid as well.
  4. Include the word acid at the end.
