What is the formula for naming an ionic compound?
A
(Name of cation) + (charge in roman numerals if applicable) + (base name of anion + ide)

What is the formula for naming hydrates?
A
The formula is the same for an ionic compound with the addition of (prefix referring to the number of water molecules) hydrate.

What are the rules for naming a binary covalent compound?
A
- Write the first element’s name in its entirety (usually the one furthest left and down on the periodic table)
- Write the second element’s name as though it were an anion (base name + ide).
- Modify each element with a numerical prefix (same as the hydrates)

What are the rules for naming binary acids?
A
- Start with the prefix hydro
- Add the base name of the counterion
- Add the suffix ic at the end
- Include the word acid.

What are the rules for naming oxygen-containing polyatomic anions (oxoacids)?
A
- If the name ends with ate, change the acid name to ic.
- If the name ends with ite, change the acid name to ous.
- If the name includes a hypo or a per, transfer it to the acid as well.
- Include the word acid at the end.
