Naming Compounds and Writing Formulas Flashcards
Binary Molecular Compounds
1) First word - name of element
2) Second Word - second element with -ide suffix
3) Numerical prefixes (disregard mono for first element)
Binary Ionic Compounds (Main Group)
1) First word is name of cation (same as parent element)
2) Second word is anion with -ide suffix
Binary Ionic Compounds (Transition Metals)
1) Metal: -ous for lower charge
-ic for higher charge
roman numerals
2) If following compound, add -ide suffix
Polyatomic Ions
-ate = more oxygen
-ite = less oxygen
per- = most oxygen
hypo- = least oxygen
Binary Acids
1) add hydro- prefix to the second element in the formula
2) Replace the last syllable in 2nd element with -ic suffix and “acid”
Oxoacids
-ate –> -ic
-ite –> -ous
