naming binary ionic compounds Flashcards
what is a ionic compound
a metal bonded with a nonmetal
what happens to anions when naming ionic compounds?
their endings change to “ide” (nitride, fluoride, oxide etc.)
how do you name ionic compounds
- find and write cation
- find and write anion
- change anion ending to “-ide”
how do you name ionic formulae
- list cation first, anion second.
- write charge on top and balance.
- reduce to lowest terms
how to name with the OUS/IC naming system
- name the cation with the ous/ic ending
2. name anion with ide ending
when do you use the ous ending
in ionic bonds where the cation has the lower charge
when do you use the ic ending
in ionic bonds where the cation has the higher charge
how do you name covalent compounds
- count the number of atoms
- place the apropriate prefix in front of cation and anion
- change anion suffix to “-ide”
* *do not use “mono” for cations**
what are the prefixes (up to 10)
mono = 1 di = 2 tri = 3 tetra = 4 penta = 5 hexa = 6 hepta = 7 octa = 8 nona = 9 deca = 10
which are the 8 main oxyacids?
acetic, carbonic, nitric, sulferic, phosphoric, chloric, bromic, iodic.
