Root
portion of the nail that is buried in a fold of skin. primary site of nail growth. producing new cells that continuously push out to form the visible nail plate. generates keratin the protein that makes up the nail.
Matrix
epithelium proximal to the nail root. it contains dividing cells, which produce new nail cells. vulnerable to damage and disease.
Eponychium
(cuticle) the stratum cornuem of the epidermis. thickened layer of skin. protects area between nail and skin from bacteria and irritants. made of specialized skin cells including adult stem cells.
Lunula
whitish, crescent shaped area of the proximal end of the nail body. defines shape of nail plate.
Hyponychium
Beneath the Lunula, secures nail to fingertip.
