is the hard part of the nail. made of translucent keratin

Lunula
the white area at the base of a finger nail and toe nail.
Eponychium
Is the thickened layer of skin at the base of the fingernail and toenail.
Cuticle
is a layer of clear skin located along the bottom edge of your finger or toe.
nail grooves
the indentation between the edges of the nail plate and the skin

Is the skin on either side of the nail plate, acts as a barrier against bacteria, fungi, and viruses.

the tissue surrounding the nail, whether it be a fingernail or a toenail, including the tissue bordering the root and sides of the nail.
free edge
the nail plate leaves the end of the finger and forms a projection that is called the free edge. the free edge protects the finger tip and the hyponychium
hyponychium
is the skin just under the free edge of your nail. its located just beyond the distal end of your nail bed near your fingertip.
onychosis
when your nail separates from the skin underneath it. this condition lasts several months because a fingernail or toe nail won’t reattach to its nail bed.

onychomycosis
is a fungal infection of the nail. symptoms may including
white or yellow nail discoloration, thickening of the nail and separating of the nail from the nail bed. toenails and finger nails may be affected.
tineas manus
is a fungal infection of the hands Tinea is also called ringworm, and manuum referring to it being on the hand.
tinea causes a red, scaly rash that usually has a boarder that is slightly raised.
tinea pedis
is a fungal infection of the feet. tinea is called ringworm and pedis is feet. tinea causes a red scaly rash that usually has a boarder that is slightly raised.
paronycha
is an infection of the skin around your fingernails and toenails. Bacteria or a type of yeast called candida typically cause this infection.
onycholysis
is the periodic shedding and falling of one or more nails in whole or part. it can be seen after fever, trauma, adverse reaction to meds.
onychia
inflammation of the nail folds surrounding tissue of the nail plate of the nail with formation of pus and shedding of the nail. it results from the introduction of microscopic pathogens through small wounds.
onychatrophia
is an atrophy or wasting away of the nail plate which causes it to lose its luster, become smaller and sometimes shed entirely. injury or disease may account for this irregularity.
onychoptosis
the loosening and falling of the fingernails.
blue nails
low level or lack of oxygen circulating in your red blood cells. condition called cyanosis.
egg shell nails
condition is called hapalonychia causes your nails to be soft and thin. nails affected by this condition tend to bend or break more easily. often split or flake at the end.
corrugations
long ridges that run either lengthwise or across the nail.
kolionychia
spoon nails are thin and soft and shaped like a little spoon that is often capable of holding a drop of water. most frequent cause is iron deficiency anemia.
furrows
transverse lines or grooves across the fingernails.
onychogryposis
nail disease that causes one side of the nail to grow faster than the other.
onychocryptosis
ingrown toe nail frequent problem resulting from either growth of nail fold inwards into the nail bed or abnormal embedding of the nail plate into the nail groove, causing significant discomfort.
melanonychchia
is a condition od either the fingernails or toenails. this is when you have brown or black lines on your nails.
onycauxis
causes by chronic trauma. long term stress on the nail bed.
agnails or hangnails
often seen at the end of a digit near the nail. there are many blood vessels and nerve endings in this part of the nail. hangnails also cause inflammation and swelling that may press on the nerve endings.
bruised nails or splinter hemorrhages
occur when blood leaks or swells from small blood vessels that run up and down the nail bed. tiny blood cloths known as micro emboli in the capillaries can also cause splinter hemorrhages. one of the most common causes of splinter hemorrhages is trauma to the nails.
leukonychia
is a condition where white lines or dots appear on your finger or toenails caused by gel or acrylic or injury to nail bed.
pterygium
exposure to excessive amounts of ultra violet light.
beaus lines
are indentations that run across the nails.
