NAGE 1 Flashcards
What 3 things make up a nucleotide?
- Nitrogenous base
- Sugar molecule
- 1/more phosphate groups
What are pyrimidines?
Benzene rings with nitrogen substituted for C in positions 1 and 3.
What are purines?
Pyrimidines with imidazole rings attached.
Which C is linked to the base?
1’ C
Which C is linked to the phosphate?
3’ C
Which are the 2 purines?
Adenine and Guanine
Which are the 3 pyrimidines?
Cytosine, Thymine, Uracil
Difference between Thymine and Uracil.
No methyl group in uracil.
What is a nucleoside?
Bases + Sugar.
What is a nucleotide?
Base bound to sugar-phosphate complex.
How is the primary structure of a nucleic acid determined?
Base sequence read from 5’ to 3’ end
First nucleotide has free 5’ phosphate
Last nucleotide has free 3’.
The bases are ……… to the helix.
Perpendicular
When are chromosomes visible?
Just before cells divide
Mitotic chromosomes are supercondensed
When is chromatin more extended?
During interphase, when cell division isn’t occurring.
What is the nucleosome?
DNA wrapped around histone proteins.
