What is a hyperbole?
A hyperbole is a deliberate exaggeration to create emphasis often for a humorous effect
What is a pun?
An expression that achieves emphasis or humour by creating an ambiguity, two distinct meanings being suggested either by the same word or by two similar sounding words.
What is a litotot?
A figure of speech by which an affirmation is made indirectly by denying its opposite, usually with an effect of an understatement, eg saying something was ‘easy’ when it was, in fact, quite difficult.
What is an euphemism ?
A softer, less harsh way of expressing something unpleasant eg passing away instead of ‘death’
What is a circumlocution?
The roundabout manner of referring to something at length rather than naming it briefly and directly.
What is a paradox?
A paradox is a puzzle, a statement which appears contradictory, but when considered closely, in fact makes perfect sense
What is an oxymoron?
An oxymoron is a condensed version of a paradox in which two opposites are placed side by side to heighten the effect of contrast eg perfectly imperfect. In an oxymoron, two opposites are placed side by side to one another.
What is juxtaposition?
Juxtaposition is to place words, phrases or sentences side by side.
What is neologism?
A word or phrase newly introduced/invented in a language
What is archaism?
An old fashioned word or phrase that is seldom used anymore eg thou or thee
What is a cliche?
A cliche is a phrase, idea or image that has been used so many times over the last few times that it has lost its original meaning eg at the end of the day
