What is an anacrusis
The notes which appear before the first strong beat of a musical phrase. It sounds as an upbeat
What is an alto voice
Lowest female voice
What is an aria
A song in an opera, oratorio or cantata with orchestral accompaniment
What is an arco
An instruction given to sting players to use a bow. Term might be given to a passage using pizzicato
Arpeggio
Notes of a chord played one after the other
What is a cadenza
A passage of Music which allows soloists to display their technical ability in singing or playing an instrument
What is a concerto
Work for a solo instrument and orchestra , normally in 3 movements
What is a crescendo
Gradually getting louder
What is homophony
Texture where you hear melody with accompaniment or when all 3 parts move together rhythmically
What is imitation
When the melody is immediately copied in another part, it does not to be an exact copy
What is an obbligato
A prominent so,o instrument part in a piece of vocal music
What is an oratorio
Usually a story for the bible set to music for soloists, chorus or an orchestra. May include recitiatives, duets and chorus
What is an ornament
It decorates a melody by adding short , extra notes
What is an ostinato
A short musical pattern repeated many times
What is pizzicato
an instruction given to string players to pluck the strings instead of using the bow
