Na+ Channel Blockers Flashcards
Class IA (quinidine)
Moderate Na+ channel blockade, Inc. ERP (effective refractory period)
Class IB (lidocaine)
Weak Na+ channel blockade, Dec. ERP
Class IC (flecainide)
Strong Na+ channel blockade, Same ERP
Na+ channel blockade ranking:
IC > IA > IB
Increasing effective refractory period (ERP):
IA > IC > IB (decreases)
Propranolol
- Some class I activity
- Adverse effects include bronchospasm, bradycardia, fatigue
Acebutolol
Cardioselective beta-blocking drug, so better for use in patients with asthma (to avoid adverse effects like bronchospasm)
Esmolol
Short acting blocker used primarily for intraoperative and acute arrhythmias
Sotalol
Nonselective Beta-blocking drug that prolongs the action potential (delays the slow outward current of K+)
