Socialization
A
- The process of making someone ready for a particular societal role
- One learns to adapt to new roles, develop a social awareness of themselves individually and within a group

Professional Socialization
A
- Expands the definition of socialization to include the formalization and internalization of a professional identity congruent with the professional role. It is a lifelong occurrence.
ex. prof nursing socialization often begins in an ed. institution (UFV)

Resocialization
A
- occurs when someone transitions into a new setting.
- “a role is a set of expectations associated with a position”
- N’s have many resocialization experiences as continue through Ning career. ex. new jobs, move to diff position or educational endeavors.

Kramer’s Model (1974) 4 stages:
A
“reality shock”- transition of grads from educational institutions to the work place setting.
- Mastery of skills and routines- nurse focuses on mastering skills.
- Social Integration- peer recognized and acceptance
- Moral Outrage- recognizes incongruities is system
- Conflict resolution- surrenders behaviors and values

Daltons Model (1977) 4 stages:
A
4 stage model of professional care model.
1- Apprentice, subordinate-helping & learning
- Colleague- works independently
- Informal mentor/role model- influences, guides, directs
- Sponsor- influences the direction of the organization ex. manager.

Benners Novice to Expert (1984) 5 stages:
A
model based on levels of proficiency.
- Novice- no experience, rule bound, inflexible
- Advanced Beginner- demonstrates marginally accepted performance. Recognize meaningful “aspects” of a real situation to make judgments.
- Competent Practitioner- 2-3 yrs experience, good organization and planning abilities. Coordinates multiple complex care demands.
- Proficient- 3-5 yrs experience. Perceives situation as a whole rather than parts. Focus on long term goals.
- Expert- highly proficient, intuitive, analytic ability. Take action because “it felt right.”
