Zeus
Wife of Zeus; Considered the queen of the Olympians. “Our Lady” or “Great Lady”
Hera
Primarily god of the sea, but he is also associated with earthquakes and horses.
Poseidon
The goddess of the family heart; Gradually seen as the protector of the household, family, neighborhood and the state.
Hestia
Priestesses who each made a virginity pledge in honor of the goddess they worshipped.
The Vestal Virgins
Deity of the harvest and general fetility of the Earth. She stood for the grain that was in full bloom.
Demeter
Daughter of Demeter and Zeus; She stood for the seed.
Persephone
Goddess of untamed nature; portrayed as the huntress with bow and arrow; safe guard the animals in her territory.
Artemis
Deity of moderation and reason; create laws, making him the one who rewards righteous behavior and punishes wrong doing; Archery god and has the power to use his arrow to inflict illness or heal people; Deity of prophecy, god of music and petry and other arts.
Apollo
a virgin goddess of combat, knowledge, and domestic arts and crafts; defender of all cities and the patroness of Athens.
Athena
God of war and son of Zeus and Hera. Despised by most Greeks.
Ares
Embodiment of ardent desire and physical love; wed to Hephaestus but frequently has affairs because it is who she is.
Aphrodite
God’s foremost metalworker and master artisan. He designs and crafts brilliant and exquisite works.
Hephaestus
Youngest of the Gods. Zeus’ messenger, the god’s herald, a traveler’s companion, the master of the dead, the bringer of fertility, patron of the orators, writer’s businesspeople, thieves and sports.
Hermes
God of the afterlife/underworld
Hades
God of wine; fertility of the grape vine and gradually expanded to include fertility in general (crop, animal, human)
Dionysus
A make-believe story about fairies, wizards giants and others who possess magical or unusual powers
Fairytale
Traditions, customs and stories of one culture or group of people.
Folklore
A story about the past that is considered to be true but it is usually a combination of both fact and fiction.
Legend
A group of myths from a single group or culture.
Mythology
More that what is natural or normal; showing godlike or magical powers, exhibiting superhuman strength.
Supernatural
A collection of tales.
Aesop’s Fables
An assortment of tales and fables from Arabia, Egypt, India, and Persia that were gathered from oral traditions.
A Thousand and One Nights
The extant epics of many cultures around the world, typically the source of myth and folklore.
The Great Epics of the World
