Apollo loves Daphne. Daphne dose not want to marry. Daphnes father turns her into a tree.
Prometheus
-Steals from gods
-Zeus furious
- Prometheus chained to rock and eagle eats his liver everyday. Eventually he is freed, brother of Epimetheus, helped humans and made them able to think
Epimetheus
-Brother of Prometheus after thought doesn’t think through the consequences of his actions
-Gives away all of the good gifts to the animals, saved nothing for the humans
Pandora
-Given as a gift to Epimetheus by Zeus who wanted revenge on Prometheus
-Very Curious
-Given a box as a gift and told not to open it, opened the box and released war hunger and all evils, only hope remained in the box
Persephone, Demeter and Hades
-Demeter is god of harvest
Persephone is her daughter
-Hades kidnaps Persephone
Demeter makes earth barren to punish world
-Persephone spends 6 months in the underworld and 6 months on earth
Cupid and Psyche
-Fall in love and marry
-Psyche not allowed to see Cupid
-Psyche drips wax on him by accident
-Psyche punished and sent away but eventually allowed to return to Cupid
Theseus and the Minotaur
-Theseus slays the Minotaur
-Forgot to put up the sail
-Princess Ariadne gave him a piece of thread
Daedalus and the flight of Icarus
-Icarus flys to close to the sun
-Daedalus made wings of feathers and wax
-Tries to escape King Minos Labyrinth
Echo and Narcissus
-Echo angered Hera
-She falls in love with Narcissus, a beautiful man who falls in love with himself
-Wastes away staring at his own reflection in a pool and becomes a white and purple flower
King Midas
-As a reward for a good deed Midas requests the golden touch
-Immediately regrets the destructive gift when he can’t eat, sleep, or hug his daughter
-Begs to be turned back to normal
-Gos to visit the river Pactolus to be turned back to normal
Pyramus and Thisbe
-Young neighbors fall in love
-Plan to run away together
-Secret meeting goes wrong
-Pyramus arrives at the meeting place
-Spots Thisbe’s bloody veil thinks a lion ate her so he kills himself
-She joined him in death when she found out what happened
-The berries on the mulberry tree remain red in their memory
Medusa and Perseus
-Athena transforms Medusa into a gorgon, a woman with snakes for hair who can turn men into stone with a glance
-Medusa is later killed by Perseus who is aided by winged sandals from Hermes and a shield, invisible helmet, and a bag from Athena
Death of Achilles
-Achilles mom dipped her baby in the waters of immortality, but she held him by his hell. No arrow or weapon could harm him until Paris shoots him in the heel during the Trojan war.
Orpheus and Eurydice
-Orpheus, the son of Apollo and Calliope, ventured down to the kingdom of the dead to retrieve his dead wife, Eurydice.
-Hades agreed to free his wife Eurydice on one condition
-Orpheus was not to look back at his wife on the walk back to Earth. When they were almost home, he looked back and lost his wife forever
Tantalus
-Tantalus abuses his privilege of sharing the food of the gods, Zeus punishes him in Hades. Although parched and famished, Tantalus is not allowed to reach the fruit or water that surrounds him.
Sisyphus
-Sisyphus is known for being devious and tricky guests to his home as well as the gods. As punishment, he is forced to roll up a giant boulder up a hill every day for eternity.
Athena and Arachne
-Arachne is a skilled but vain weaver who claims to be superior to Athena. They begin a weaving competition during which Arachne mocks the gods. Athena turns Arachne into a creature able to spin thread forever
-The first spider.
Why is Zeus associated with lightning
Zeus had the ultimate power he was king of all gods.
