Myriapoda Flashcards
What are the two classes of the sub Phylum Myriapoda that centipedes and millipedes are part of?
Chilopoda - Centipedes; Diplopoda - Millipedes
How many legs do millipedes have versus centipedes?
Millipedes have 2 pairs of legs per segment versus centipedes that have 1 pair per segment
What is a somite?
Each of a number of body segments containing the same internal structures; clearly visible in invertebrates such as earthworms but also present in the embryonic stages of vertebrates.
What do millipedes eat?
They are detritivores eating plant matter and fungi
What do centipedes eat?

How long do millipedes live for?
Up to 10 years
Name 3 methods of defence used by millipedes
Toxic repellents (Hydrogen cyanides – “Hydrocyanic acid”) ;Writhing on back in a serpentine fashion to move away (snake-like and swifter movement) ;Rolling up into a tight ring to protect the vulnerable underside and legs (tough exoskeleton)
What are the major millipede predators?
African Civet and Millipede Assassin (Ectrichodia crux)
Name 3 methods of defence used by centipedes
Painful bite;Largely nocturnal; living under rocks and other safe refuges;Able to move fairly swiftly
